5 facts about jacob
The same Heb. root (עקב) is found in the noun “heel” and the verb “to take by the heel” (Hos 12:3). This same root also means “to deceive” (Jer 9:3; Gen 27:36) and the name Jacob is based on this root. When Jacob stole his older brother’s blessing, Esau affirmed that Jacob was correctly named, “for he has supplanted me (וַֽיַּעְקְבֵ֨נִי׃֙) these two times” (27:36).
Personal names containing this same Sem. root (but prob. with different meanings) are also found in the extra-Biblical documents contemporary with the patriarchs but are not found elsewhere in the OT. No individual in Israel, apart from the patriarch, bore the name Jacob until the Hel.
